Plusnet

Plusnet's digital champs giving an hour95,000 people in Sheffield have never been online (ONS), and Sheffield based broadband provider Plusnet naturally feels that it can play a part in helping people discover the wonders of the web.

During October, it joined forces with UK online centres, Sheffield City Council and Heeley Development Trust to help run “Go ON Sheffield”, a week of exciting events to help off-line Sheffield residents discover the many advantages the web has to offer.

From pubs, to schools, to bingo halls, internet taster sessions were held around the City, with hundreds of people trying the net for the first time.  With help from Plusnet champs and local volunteers, beginners' sampled online banking and email, alongside how to keep in touch and take advantage of community benefits like public forums and networking sites. 39% of homes are not using broadband and as an extra special bonus, Plusnet even donated fifty broadband packages to help beginners get online at home and the lucky winners were presented with their prizes at a celebration event at Sheffield United Football Club (right).
