Skype Hero programme a great success
Skype’s Pass IT on page – ‘Be a Skype Hero’ has attracted over 21,000 visitors in the UK and Skype’s guide to all the amazing things people can do on the internet has been downloaded over 4,000 times.
Skype provides free voice and video calls. Back in January, the Race Online 2012 team approached it to become one of its 10 corporate Race Online 2010 launch partners. By agreeing, Skype undertook to encourage users to become part of Race Online 2012 Pass IT on initiative. It also offered tools to access and understand the internet. To date, Skype’s Pass IT on page ‘Be a Skype Hero’ has attracted over 21,000 visitors in the UK. Skype’s guide to all the amazing things people can do on the internet has also been downloaded over 4,000 times. This is the first step to creating a deep understanding of Pass IT on in the UK and Skype expects to increase this over the next 18 months.
Skype’s aim was to educate and harness the enthusiasm of its wide reaching and passionate user base to hit the ground running with Pass IT On. It has encouraged employees and advocates, as well as current and future users to encourage individuals to venture online and use the internet to enhance their lives.
On Silver Surfers' Day, 21st May, 32,000 events were organised across the UK by Ofcom and Digital Unite. Skype enlisted staff and volunteers to be a virtual Skype helpdesk resource for these events. Skype’s London office was also the helpdesk headquarters and volunteers were ‘Skype Heroes’, to guide new users to explore the full functionality of Skype in response to calls from all over the UK.
Skype aims to break down barriers, whether they are between people who need to communicate, between people and technology, or lifestyle barriers that leave individuals isolated. As a technology and a means of saving money, it is a fantastic means of attracting people online. By becoming a Race Online 2012 partner and through its work already, Skype is making great progress helping to create a 100% connected UK.
