Views from the young

Grange park RangersGetting access to the internet is often seen as something which concerns older people more than younger people. Of course, there are so many reasons for the older generation to get online, not least as it gives them great opportunities to catch up with younger friends and relatives – be that via e-mail, social networks or free phone calls on Skype.

For a bit of inspiration, we thought we’d ask some of the (very) younger generation why they think being online is amazing. So we asked members of the Grange Park Rangers U9 football team in Northampton what the internet means to them. Perhaps the quotes below will provide food for thought for their parents and (great) grandparents.

Owen: “My Nan uses the internet for her car insurance and says everytime how much cheaper she can get it now, so that’s good – it saves her money.”

Mason: “I don’t understand how the world worked without the internet.”

Sonny: “My Nanny lives in Australia and uses the internet to send e-mails to let us know what she is doing. My Mum sends her photos of the family so that she can see us growing up.”

Thomas: “Our family could not imagine life without the internet. How would we communicate with the world?”

Jake: “You learn lots of other things whilst trying to find out what you need. I know that I am very lucky and it would be good if everyone had the same chances that I have.”

Josh: “If we did not have the Internet we would not have access to a lot of different information available. People go on the Internet to find lots of useful stuff.”

Tom: “If you don’t have a cell phone you can chat to your friends without going round to their house. My Nana knows how to use it but I think she could have some help learning how to search for things.”

It’s always inspiring to talk to people with such different and refreshing perspectives. And on this occasion, really great affirmation of why getting online is so important.
