Why get involved?

Race Online 2012 is a challenge for all of us in the UK to work together to build a nation where everyone has access to the transformative power of the net.

We are calling for urgent action to get millions more people online by the end of the Olympic year 2012, through partnership with government, industry, charities and individuals.

Whether you're an individual or part of an organisation, big or small, your contribution can make an enormous difference - any organisation in any sector can sign up, make a pledge and help the 8.4 million adults in the UK currently offline.

I want to help personally...

As an individual, join the UK's growing network of digital champions and help someone who's currently off-line discover the wonders of the web.  Visit www.go-on.co.uk/champions for top tips, info and films from famous faces.  Also 'like' the digital champion page on Facebook to network and swap stories and pics with other champs.

The social and moral case

  • People must know where they can find local web access and/or training points and where they can go to get assistance with online public services, supported by local digital champions in every community.
  • We should work towards ensuring that people have easy and affordable access to the internet in the same way they can access water, electricity or gas.
  • Industry should ensure that products and services are usable and accessible for older and disabled people.

The economic case

  • Our citizens and UK Plc will have a competitive advantage in the global knowledge economy.
  • The UK economy benefits to the tune of an estimated £22 billion.
  • Government services could save £900m annually, if all people currently both digitally and socially excluded were to move just one government contact a month online.
  • The 20% lowest income households would benefit from more than £1bn of savings from shopping and paying bills online.
  • Commercial organisations that operate, recruit or contact their customers and/or employees online can access a new market of 8.4 million newly online people, reduce their transaction costs and gain market advantage.
