BT

An inaugural Race Online 2012 partner, BT’s established a new three year plan – BT programme, Get IT Together, to help excluded groups across the UK benefit from the net.

Get It Together raises awareness with community groups, charities, social enterprises, schools and individuals and creates opportunities for BT or partner employees to get involved, providing other channels through which messages are communicated.

However, it isn’t the only way that BT is inspiring champs and off-liners:

  • Its Internet Rangers Awards are rewarding young people and their schools for helping older people use the net; it’s still possible to apply and one lucky Ranger will win £200 in IT vouchers and a new iPad!
  • It has provided a Community Webkit giving away a free website and hosting for charities and community groups
  • Through the Community Connections scheme, community and charitable groups can apply for a year’s free broadband.
  • It has also embedded the UK online centre finder to help on-liners signpost a low cost, local internet course.
  • It has created a set of simple to use downloadable training resources that can be used by the helper and/or the learner.  It’s also developing heaps more great free resources, so keep an eye out here.
  • It has funded an Age UK training video that’s now being used to prepare “helpers” to engage with an off-liner, and also supports the Age UK Internet Champion of the Year Awards.
  • It has supported Microsoft with the launch of its low cost hardware offer.
  • Through its Regional Community Programme, BT’s also funding community based resources to help people in disadvantaged communities get online. Working with Citizens Online and local partners in 7 locations across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the programme better enables specific targeting for segments of the excluded market. It encourages and supports off-liners to find loca, low cost IT training.
  • It’s also funding a three year Scope research programme exploring how the internet/ICT can support independent living for people with multiple disabilities. Findings will be shared with other charities working with people with disabilities, ensuring any common solutions are extended.
